Spotlight On: Me!

Hey guys,

So I figured it to be a good idea for you guys to get to know the person behind this blog. So my 1st "Spotlight On" is gonna be on myself! Normally these Spotlight posts will be sets of photos I've taken of a particular person/object or place that I've focused all my efforts on. So this one is gonna be a little different as I'll be sharing more information than normal! Here goes:

Hello. My name is Kimberley, I'm 25, live in London, eat too much chocolate and run this blog, The Lens Affair. Nice to meet you.

Pretty right? Okay not so much. Haha, I figured it good for you to see this photo though, as 90% of my photos are made of this. But here you go, have a nice one:

So this is me. Now you've put a face to the words/photos, it makes sense for you to know a little more about me. At work in our in-house magazine, we have a section called "5 Things You Didn't Know About 'insert name'" every week on a different Partner, so I'm gonna follow that one for this. Some of you may know these things about me if you know me in person, but yeah, most won't.

5 Things You Don't Know About Me (possibly):

1. I went to the University of Lincoln and studied a Ba(Hons) in Animation.

2. I live with 3 boys, Jack, Dan and Ciaran. I'll talk more about them in a moment.

3. I drink a ridiculous amount of tea and will always leave the mugs around the house with at least a third still left in it.

4. I want to be a Photographer one day. I don't know what Photographer yet, but I know I'll figure that out along the way. It's part of the excitement!

5. I've actually started 2 blogs before this, but this is the only one I've actually stuck with! Lucky you!

Got it? Good.

I feel like we're doing well here. If there's anything else you wanna know about me then Tweet me or Tumblr me (I know lots of people ask other people questions on Tumblr. Although I have no idea why you'd wanna ask me anything really but the option is there)

Now we've covered some info on myself, it's time for you to meet the housemates. I spend a lot of my down time with these guys and they'll appear in my content a lot for sure, so it makes sense for you to get a run down on who they are! (Most of you who read this will actually probably know them pretty well but I'mma talk about them anyway)

First up is the lovely Jack Howard.

Such a catch. He's one the loveliest people I know and also one of the funniest! He's doing amazing things right now and I'm sure a lot of you have spotted his little face around the internet! He's a good egg and good fun to hang out with. He also helps me out in the kitchen whenever I cook for everyone :)

Next up we have Daniel J Layton.

Dan is also another face some of you have seen on your laptop screens I'm sure. He's gonna be on movie screens one day though so keep your eyes peeled ;)
I went to University with Dan (went to Uni with Jack too but didn't know him as well then) and he fast became a very good friend of mine. He's an incredibly kind and theatrical person. He can often be heard singing around the house while baking delicious goods. Dan is the King of baking.

And last but not least is Ciaran O'Brien. The boyfriend.

So the quality of this photo isn't that great. That's because it's almost impossible to get a nice photo of Ciaran without catching him off guard (which doesn't happen often) so mad props to Hazel Hayes, who managed to snap this one least. I kindly stole it from Facebook.
Ciaran is the guy behind the camera for most UK YouTubers these days. Seen something incredibly pretty looking on Youtube? It was probably him. He also does all the Jack and Dean stuff. He's an incredibly talented man (as are all of them) and I'm so very proud of him. I like that I get wake up to his face each morning, even though he insults me most of the time.
So yeah, him, love of my life and all that crap. Makes me laugh, feel safe, feel loved and is one of my best friends.

So that's my household and I think you can pretty much guess what my home life is like. The best.
I think that about covers enough information for now, right? You'll learn more as we go along on this little blog journey I have no doubt.
Hope you enjoyed getting to know me and thanks for being interested enough to read about it!

See ya later! :)

Stolen from Jack Howards Instagram. Thanks Jack.
This is us at our Christmas pressie from Jack. We went Go Karting. I won.

The Sunday Edit: Tiredness Kills

I am exhausted. End of.

I have been back at work for the grand total of 4 days and already I have missed my midweek post days on Wednesday and Thursday (really good at sticking to that schedule) and I'm really quite upset with myself if I'm honest. However, at the same time, I am just too tired. Obviously everyone is knackered on their first few days back on the job after a break, it's natural. You've been slobbed out for days, eating and doing nothing, then suddenly BAM! Reality comes back like a nasty slap in the face. Time to set the alarm again.

Unfortunately I know my job only too well and know that this type of tiredness is set to stay around until my next stretch of time off. My job is physically and mentally demanding with lots of hours on your feet and a million and one things to do. It's unrelenting and this makes writing for my blog difficult at times. I'm always coming up with ideas though and my notebook is filling up fast with places to visit, people to contact, things to write, yet when it comes to a spare 3-4 hours to myself I want to crawl into bed, drink a cup of tea and shut my eyes for as long as possible!
I've realised I'm making my life sound pretty shit right now but it really isn't! I actually enjoy my job and have a lot of fun when I'm there! The one thing I can take solace in is that hopefully soon I'll be cutting out some of those working hours and going part time. (as I spoke about in my previous post here)

I'm sure a lot of other bloggers will agree, tiredness can be the biggest killer of creativity, with something like a blog taking the biggest hit. I love writing here, taking pictures and sharing the things I love with you all but when I'm tired, it can sometimes be the last thing I want to do while still being the first thing I want to do. Such a nasty circle.
I know plenty of bloggers though who post regularly while working it around a full time job, kids and other responsibilities. I think I just need to get myself in to a rhythm and go from there, as it's not impossible, just hard.

I just need to either drink a lot more coffee or maybe start posting on the go! (Not a bad idea actually)

The Sunday Edit: Being Creative

Okay, so most of you who read this blog will know by now that I like Photography and I plan on doing it a whole lot more over this next year. But what most of you won't know is that I have a quite a creative past as well.

When I first moved to London just over 2 years ago, I originally moved here to pursue a life long(ish) goal of becoming an Animator. Something I'd wanted to do alongside becoming a Princess since I was little. When I got here I worked full time at John Lewis for 7 months and worked a full time Internship at an Animation Studio. It sounds bonkers I know, but I loved it so much. Eventually the hard work paid off and I went into Animation full time and started to gain Freelance studio work at a pace I never expected. It was everything I wanted. However, what I was not to know at the time is that 3 months down the line, I would find out I had pretty bad Arthritis in my hands (my hands would stiffen and swell after only a few hours, leaving me pretty much unable to draw for the rest of the day) and my career and dream fell to the ground in pieces.

It was tough, knowing I couldn't do what I studied, trained for and loved for the last 6-7 years of my life and trying to figure out what to do next was really challenging. However, roughly 18 months later after many different obstacles, barriers, walls to climb and support from my friends, I've finally found myself here: Living in a lovely house with 3 of my best friends, one of them being my wonderful boyfriend, already going part time at my current job to pursue a new career in Photography, running this little internet space of mine and just being excited about the future again. Pretty good I'd say.

Yet I still have this teeny, tiny, little hole sitting inside me that misses the Animation and Illustration I used to do, and although that's to be expected, it's made me think about what else I could do to keep it fulfilled. So that's where my next venture comes in. Going part time means I have more time to focus on my own things, Photography being the obvious one of course, but also something I've been thinking of doing for a while now. Creating my own personalised greetings cards!
Hopefully in early Spring, I want to have my own little Etsy store opened up (which is set up already but has nothing on it) selling my creations! It wouldn't be anything hardcore, cos you know, Arthritis and all that, but something small, achievable and creative that I can do for myself and for anyone else who likes my stuff. I've always wanted to do something like this and now's my chance! So keep your eyes peeled for when that goes live, as I'll most likely being going nuts about it on here.

I'm proud of where I am now and all my new ambitions, which goes to show if you can't do something you've wanted to do FOREVER for whatever reason, just look at all the paths that can lead off from it. It does take time and it definitely isn't easy but it is achievable and when you finally get there, and start wanting it as much as you wanted the last thing, it's the best feeling in the world.

Good luck guys.

Photos of the Week #4 - St Dunstan in the East

This was such a strange place. I'd researched a little before I went and also saw photos from other people but I never expected it to be so... small.

When I got there it was this tiny little Church ruin in the middle Central East London, hidden away by fancy, high rise modern buildings. I would never have thought to even wonder down the small stretch of road that leads you to it. Although very tiny, it was pretty stunning and I recommend a quick visit if ever you are in the area.

I reckon I'll re-visit in the Summer months, I bet it's beautiful.

Hello 2015!

Photo: Tumblr - peaceandloveinmylifealways.tumblr.com
And I'm back! Admittedly that was a longer break than I was planning on taking from this blog, kinda got carried away with the whole not doing anything malarky. It was really needed.
But now I'm back on the blogging bandwagon and ready to share 2015 with you all! Gonna make a few changes on the blog too, one of them being an actual schedule for this place (and yes I know I've said that before but this time I intend to stick to it)
So this year I really plan on pushing my photography and in result of this, push my blog and all of it's content! So here's the deal:

Wednesdays will be Spotlight On: "insert person/thing." This will be a post entirely dedicated to a person, place or object I deem worthy of such a slot on my blog. I'm hoping to make them as interesting, and possibly challenging, as I can!

Fridays will be Photo/Photos of the Week. Okay, so this one supposedly started when I started my blog but I somewhat didn't keep up with it due to my work schedule. I think it was silly to try and achieve this during the busiest 3 months of my job (Christmas!) But this will get back on track!

Sundays will be the Sunday Edit. A post just for me, and you guys who read it, about anything I want. It could be photography, lifestyle or just some ideas I got going on. A little space just for me to keep you updated on what I'm up to and where!

So that's the plan guys. Hoping to make this a regular weekly thing, providing I get my butt in gear and do the work! (which I will) I'm really looking forward to this year. I've got a lot of ideas, plans and ambition to really get things off the ground. It's exciting and I can't wait to get going!

Happy New Year everyone :)
